George Currier
Maxville’s George Currier Currier, a man of many talents, will be recognized this year for his numerous contributions to Glengarry sports. Currier has played most sports all his life, in and around the area. As the eleventh of 13 children he participated in hockey, broomball, and softball- to name a few.
He played pewee, bantam, midget, and old timers hockey. He also coached and refereed minor hockey, in Maxville. He refers to Nick Haramis as his partner in crime, not just because so much time spent working in collaboration, but also because of good times spent playing and organizing sports together.
In 1966, George and his brother Edgar put together a Maxville’s first broomball league, creating a loop that included teams from Alexandria and Cornwall.
Currier also coached the Maxville’s junior ‘B’ hockey team for eight years, succeeding in leading the club to the Eastern Ontario Championship, in 1966.
He continued to put on many bonspiels and fundraisers to help organizations such as the Lions Club, of which he was member for 45 years and twice president.
